somari davis-el
Somari is an abstract artist based in Chicago, whose work is deeply influenced by the emotional landscape of music. Her art serves as an outlet for the anxieties and overthinking that often cloud her mind, offering a space for release and reflection. Through the process of painting, she transforms internal chaos into vibrant, dynamic compositions, using color, texture, and form to communicate what words cannot. Music, in its many forms, is both the soundtrack and catalyst for her creative journey, guiding her brushstrokes and infusing her work with rhythm and energy. Each piece reflects her struggle to quiet the noise of daily life, turning personal warfare into visual expressions of catharsis. For Somari, painting is not just a practice, but a necessary refuge—a way to step out of her head and into the present moment, finding both clarity and peace through the act of creation.
ILA Creative Studio is an organization with a clear mission of connecting Black artists to resources that help elevate their individual purpose. We know that barriers to access, and limited visibility can become frustrating for artists of color, and we exist to serve as both a resource and restoration for artists who find themselves in need. It's not always easy to create from a place of limits, but these artists show us that their imaginative creative spirit is limitless. To remind them of their power, their influence, and their gifts, so that they may feel empowered to keep sharing what was so purposefully planted inside of them.
