Alexa Gutierrez was born and raised in Houston, Tx. After completing her degree in Studio Arts with a concentration in Fiber and Material Studies at The School of the Art Institute, she currently lives and creates in Logan Square.
Her digital and physical collaged weavings explore themes of identity, trauma, and irreverence towards the Christian church and purity culture as a lesbian/queer artist. Through vibrant colors and textured materials, she confronts societal expectations and reclaims narratives often marked by shame. Each piece serves as a tactile exploration of resilience and healing, inviting viewers to engage with the complexities of faith, sexuality, and self-acceptance. By reclaiming domestic materials into statements of defiance, weaving becomes a process of examining and continuing this reclamation.
