Andrea Coleman’s work makes use of found family images, memorabilia, and videos as a basis to produce a series of digital paintings. Combined with expressive mark-making and coloration, each piece addresses elements of nostalgia and a distorted form of memory. Coleman digitally manipulates images found in photo albums, or VHS recordings to challenge ideas of authenticity and re-appropriate the aesthetic of aura and memory. Drawing inspiration from her own, familial relationships and oral histories, the work investigates the intuitive interconnectedness and multidimensional relationship between snapshot and portraiture. Andrea Coleman’s work centers on the use of found family images, memorabilia, and videos to create digital paintings. Biography:

Andrea Coleman is a Chicago-based visual artist, writer, and storyteller who channels the essence of her suburban roots and draws inspiration from animation art and mural concepts. Using mediums such as paint, fabric, and personal archives, her work delicately explores the interplay of aura and narrative, offering a glimpse into the acts of reminiscing and honoring. Graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Columbia College Chicago, Coleman’s journey has been quietly marked by recognition. She has received the A+T Seed Grant and the Make A Wave Grant from 3Arts, showcasing her commitment to her craft. Formerly an artist-in-residence at the Chicago Artist Coalition, she was recognized as one of the Breakout Artists for Chicago’s Next Generation of Image Makers in 2021. Coleman’s work has been featured at well-established fairs and galleries, including EXPO Chicago, Kavi Gupta Gallery, and Blanc Gallery, further establishing her presence in the art world.
